Schützen on the Hills

Typical North Burgenland wine-growing municipality with a strong village character, the last settlement on the Wulka before it flows into Lake Neusiedler, nestling between the downland of the Ruster Hügelland and the Leitha Hills. Distance to Eisenstadt, the provincial capital, 8 km. C. 1,000 hectares of forest, 900 hectares of agricultural land and 150 hectares of vineyards in the hands of c. 20 wine-growing businesses. Municipality known in the local dialect as: “Gschiaß”. Original settlement: A small village built round a green. Partly preserved ensembles of gabled houses. In the centre the parish church of St Maria Magdalena with baroque west facade and a defensive wall, beside it the village square with the village well and the municipal office. Since 2001 part of Unesco World Heritage Fertö-Lake Neusiedler. Cycle path connections to nearby Eisenstadt, the provincial capital, and to the Lake Neusiedler cycle path. Regular public bus and rail services to Eisenstadt or Neusiedl am See, road connections to the S31 in Eisenstadt. In recent decades the municipality has developed into a dormitory municipality with a good quality of life. New building land developed, with 100 building plots, detached and terraced houses. With the by-pass built in 2014 the settlement has become an essentially traffic calmed area. Family-friendly: Children’s playgrounds, beach volleyball court.
