Mörbisch on the Lake

The municipality of Mörbisch am See is well-known far beyond the borders of our Province as a tourist resort, wine-growing municipality and especially as a festival village. Mörbisch am See lies on the western shore of Lake Neusiedler and shares a border with the Hotter area on the Hungarian frontier at Kroisbach - Fertörakos. The area covered by the Hotter amounts to 2,805 hectares. Mörbisch lies 118 m above sea level and is thus one of the lowest lying municipalities in Austria. Our municipality has 2,378 inhabitants. Our village was mentioned in a document for the first time in 1254. The name at that time was "possessio Megyes", which, freely translated, is something like "Sour cherry village". Up to 1921, the year that Burgenland became part of Austria, the official name was "Fertömegyes" - "Fertö" means lake. The Croatian name is "Merbis". The Mörbisch people themselves say "Miawisch". The oldest part of our municipality is the main street, from which a number of so-called "Hofgassen" branch off on both sides. In each “Hofgasse” (“Streckhof“ or “Schmalhof“) four peasant farmers normally lived. A particular feature is the covered staircases decorated with columns, the "Vorhallenhäuser" or "Arkadenstiegen". Our “Hofgassen” have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003.

Secluded squares, sublime “Arkadenhäuser”, regional delicacies and a peaceful idyll: In Mörbisch am See many such insider’s tips beguile you, and the varied activities available enthral visitors again and again. Besides the lakeside stage, on which the “Seefestspiele” or lakeside festival productions attract thousands of opera lovers every year from all over the world, our guests also find kilometres of fully developed cycle paths, and hiking and Nordic walking trails, and they can enjoy a unique and superb experience of the natural world. The Pannonian landscape is truly idyllic, and invites you to walk in the vineyards. The experience pool guarantees bathing fun for the whole family, and in the harbour ferries are waiting to take cyclists and hikers to the other side of Lake Neusiedler. Sports enthusiasts get their money’s worth with the wide range of watersports on offer.
